The Wolfsburg midfielder will miss the Copa America but the procedure was a complete success, the CBF have confirmed.
The Brazilian football confederation (CBF) has confirmed that Luiz Gustavo has successfully undergone knee surgery.
Following the Selecao's 2-0 victory over Mexico in Sao Paulo on Sunday, Selecao team doctor Rodrigo Lasmar travelled directly to Belo Horizonte to oversee the midfielder's procedure at the Materdei hospital.
The medic then arrived back in Porto Alegre to the Hotel Vila Ventura to inform the coaching staff that the operation was a complete success.
"Now he must rest so that he recovers as soon as possible," confirmed technical coordinator Gilmar Rinaldi. "Luiz Gustavo is popular among his team-mates, who are happy to hear that he's okay."
The surgery realigned the damaged meniscus in his right knee, an injury sustained during his club side's DFB-Pokal victory over Borussia Dortmund last month.
The injury will keep the Wolfsburg midfielder out of this month's Copa America in Chile.
He was replaced in the squad by Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, who was originally named on coach Dunga's standby list for the tournament
