Following its extensive coverage of the Chibok girls’ abduction, the Cable News Network (CNN) has won a Peabody Award.
The awards ceremony held on Sunday, May 31, at the Cipriani Wall Street in Manhattan.
CNN reporters, Isha Sesay and Nima Elbagir collected the award for their part in documenting the kidnapping and the events that followed.
The over 200 Chibok girls were abducted from a school in Borno State on April 14, 2014 and most of them remain in captivity.
According to the Peabody Awards website:
“CNN approached the Boko Haram kidnapping horror from many angles, even moving Isha Sesay’s daily show to Abuja to raise the profile of the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. Sesay’s tough, live-TV interviewing, along with high-risk field reporting of Nima Elbagir, Arwa Damon and other CNN journalists, made the network’s coverage comprehensive and indispensable.”
The Peabody Award recognizes distinguished and meritorious public service by American radio and television stations, networks, online media, producing organizations, and individuals.
